Dodgeball in Arlington!

Dodgeball of Boston (map)

Selected By: Tony

This is a joint meetup with a couple of Meetup Groups in the area.

When was the last time you played Dodgeball? Whether you last played yesterday, or twenty years ago, you'll get a chance to play at Dodgeball of Boston in Arlington. This is a fundraiser for NOT-ME, a self-defense organization serving Greater Boston. Although this event is free, we strongly recommend that attendees give a $5 donation (cash only) for the cause.

What is Dodgeball at Dodgeball of Boston like?

Our Dodgeball is different. We play on a padded floor without shoes and wearing socks. This creates a fun, playful atmosphere. Our arena is smaller than the typically used hardwood floor; gym basketball court. Our studio feels as if it is built specifically to play the game of Dodgeball.

The games are played in a round robin style with all the teams in the playing area at the same time. Watching Dodgeball is almost as fun as playing. Therefore, the teams waiting to play get a front row seat right next to the action to cheer on the players.

How long is a game?

A game takes only a few minutes to play. There is constant rotation and a short wait between games.

What if I am not athletic?

Best of all, our unique venue equalizes the playing field. The people of all different abilities can play. Why? Because if you are too good, the other team will target you first and you will be taken out by a volley of balls.

Is there a place to watch or have refreshments?

There is an adjoining lounge area with tables and chairs for eating and couches for relaxing. You can also watch the games from behind safety windows.

What do we need to do before we come?

Not much. Teams usually have 6 players, but it doesn’t matter. We have played with all sorts of team sizes from 2-20. Players just need to show up in comfortable clothes wearing clean athletic socks. All participants will need to sign a waiver of liability.

How long is a typical event?

A typical event has forty eight players and takes about ninety minutes. More players will take a longer. For those events having food such as pizza before playing, you should add an additional 30 minutes. Games can be played with as few as 24 but the more the better!

What are the rules?

The rules of our Dodgeball are very simple. If you throw the ball and hit someone on the other team, that person is out. You must hit them directly and not in the head. If someone catches your throw, you are out. You hold a ball and use it to block an incoming throw. The team that gets all the other players out first wins. The rules will be explained in more detail at the start of the games.

What a great event! There was a complete spectrum of talent, and all felt included and completely invested. It was fast-paced and very entertaining, both to play and to watch. There was the thrill of victory and the agony of defeat. (Mostly the latter for my team. :-)
