Poker (and other games) in Medford

This is an open event -- all card and board games are welcome tonight!

While the game of poker has had a long and controversial history, modern poker is truly an American game. Ever since the 19th century, poker tables could be found everywhere -- the saloons in the Wild West, steamboats on the Mississippi, and the back rooms of many bars and houses.

Today, we will focus on poker games -- games which are won by the ranking of a hand. Here are a couple of games that may be played this evening:

  • Texas Hold'em is called the 'Cadillac of poker'. It's the most popular version of poker played in casinos today. The objective is to make the best five-card hand using any combination from the person's two-card hand and the five community cards.
  • Big Two (or Chuo Dai Di) is sometimes called a 'Chinese Poker' due to its use of poker hands, but has its own play style. Although it is popular in Asia, it is beginning to become popular in the United States. Four players are dealt 13 cards each, then take turns playing their cards by making poker hands out of them. Whoever plays all their cards first wins!

Please indicate in your RSVP if you have a game preference. See you there!

This location is easily accessible from Rt. 16, Rt. 28 and Rt. 93, and is walking distance from the Wellington Orange Line subway stop, near the new Station Landing apartment complex. There is free parking in the garage underneath the restaurant, and free parking all around the building.

If you are driving, be aware that Station Landing is at the intersection of Rt. 16 and Rt. 28, and you can enter the Station Landing complex from the north-bound side of Rt. 28, or the east-bound side of Rt. 16. It is across the street from Kappy's. There are a number of stores in the Station Landing complex -- look for Starbucks or Qdoba. Not Your Average Joe's is right next to these shops.

So don't just sit at home -- come join the fun!

I went to Target and got a small set of poker chips -- they are pretty nice. I'll be bringing them to the event.

Tony, I should make this one, and I'll bring my set. I can support 6-8 people playing Hold 'em.

I'll be running the Big Two table tomorrow. I hope that I can get people interested in it -- in some ways, it is more exciting and addicting to play than Texas Hold'em. Here is a link to some of the basic rules: http://home.comcast.net/~bcballard/cards/

Thanks to Brian for bringing the poker felt -- I felt like we were in Mohegan :) I really enjoyed playing some Big 2, but I'm sure Sarah was stuffing extra 2's up her sleeve! In any case, this was fun, and I'd like to make it a monthly thing going forward...
